Basic translation string variables?

Hello.

I want to ask, where can I find the exact meanings of the string variables, which can be find in many XML file.

For example:
%d - this need to be any number, mostly used for strings, whiches contain time. eg: 1min, 2mins etc.
%1$s - this need to be any installed app name

I'm not sure in every variable meanings.
Please help, where can I find these.
