I guess you try to flash the fastboot image with MiFlash in download mode. Right ?

Yes, maybe. I got "read robust failed" error in MiFlash when I was flashing from the v7130 mulilanguage rom.
So I flashed the stable v7240 with MiFlash and then with the updater app I manually flashed the Dev rom.
But I didn't see anyone on other forums with this error.

I'm still waiting for the delivery of the phone and downloaded the tool above. But if I'm signing in with withe xiaomi account, it says its cheking the permissions and the the device is not supported. I must then go to the chineese forum, get registered and its still saying the device is not supported. Is it normal if the device isn't even connected?

You have to apply for a unlock code, i guess you already did that ?
After its approved, you can check it with the unlock tool, even if the phone is not connected.
MiFlashUnlock_1.1.0315.1_en is the latest that supports Redmi 3.

Can I apply for it when I have the phone, or can I do it now? I want be able to unlock, when the phone arrives. How long does it take to get the code usually?

Yesterday after the dev rom and latest unlock tool was released i logged with my Mi account with the tool and saw that my account had the right permissions.

I dont remember exactly anymore, so i could be wrong. But i think you also need to log in to your Mi account on the phone.
But you can try already and see if it works.

The error had too, when i want with MiFlash flash dev chinese rom. I had miui 7.1.2.0 cz.
I flash with MiFlash original 7.1.1.0 and in updater app a install dev rom and then unlock BL, flash TWRP and TWRP install SuperSU, great work community
