Good afternoon everyone, I've just purchased a M1 phone which on the face of it seems spot on. Only the one problem the Chinese interface which even in English is making things awkward. How can I install the UK English Miui ROM onto the phone. I've read some of the advice here but I'm a bit confused. Thanks all in advance.

Download the update.zip (rom) from miuiandroid.com and wipe

The guide below do not come only from me its a partial copy and paste and i added some info.
Long story short you cant mix GB and ICS you can only have 1 system so update system one and two :)
    1. Power off phone (I had to pull the battery) (dont need to that)
    2. Remove SD card from phone and mount in Windows PC using card reader (or just connect the phone via usb)
    3. In windows, browse to the root of my SD card and rename the file “miuiandroid_mione-2.3.9-ICS.zip ” to be named “update.zip” (get newest version from this site)
    4. Safely remove the SD card from Windows and insert it in phone
    5. Power on phone and boot into recovery (hold down volume up when pressing the power button to turn on, don’t release volume up until the recovery menu is displayed – takes about 7 seconds)
    6. Navigate the menus in recovery using the volume keys to highlight option and the power button to select highlighted option.
    7. Select Language (English for me)
    8. Main menu > Wipe&Reset > Wipe All Data (takes about 1 minute) > Back to Mainmenu
    9. Main menu > Install update.zip to System One > Yes (takes about 3 minutes)
    10. Main menu > Reboot > Reboot to System One (takes about 3 minutes to boot into OS) (I may have selected System Two here, can’t remember for sure, sorry)
    11. Once in MIUI, I used the ‘Updater” tool to flash the “miuiandroid_mione-2.3.9c.zip” ROM from within MIUI, let me know if you need instructions for this.

you can probably just choose system 2 in step 6 and finish the steps 7 8 and 9 and it should have been done :)

Becuase when you choose to reboot you can choose what version you want System one or system two

Hi Blackstones and first off thanks for replying. I hope you will excuse the confusion on my part but can I check this out a bit more.
Download "update.zip" and wipe. (what do you mean by wipe)
3. In windows, browse to the root of my SD card and rename the file “miuiandroid_mione-2.3.9-ICS.zip ” to be named “update.zip” (get newest version from this site) I don't have a file “miuiandroid_mione-2.3.9-ICS.zip" in my root. I've downloaded "update.zip" from the site (second from the bottom on the list).
The rest seems ok to me right now but I dare say I will need to prevail on you again maybe.
Best regards
Geoff

Main menu > Wipe&Reset > Wipe All Data (takes about 1 minute) > Back to Mainmenu ? this step?
In the main menu in recovery after you select english as language you can wipe 3 areas of the phone and you should choose wipe and yes on all of them.
“miuiandroid_mione-2.3.9-ICS.zip" This is a old guide and they used to have this type of name before and they changed it to only "update.zip"

Morning all, the saga continues lol. This is what I've done so far.
Connected to pc and downloaded "update.zip" (latest version) then transfered the file to the root of my SD card.
1. Main menu > Wipe&Reset > Wipe All Data, Wipe Cache, Wipe User Date > Back to Mainmenu (I did all 3 as suggested)
2. Main menu > Install update.zip to System One > Yes
Now I've got to this stage with no problems but when the update gets to 25% it fails with the message "Install update.zip failed. Error applying update.
Just to throw something into the pot, on one set of instructions I read it said to "update system partition" which I did but to no avail.
Any one help please.

What did it say when you did" update system partition"? You should have gotten a smiley face saying updated system partition or something like that at least a smiley face :) And if you do it 2 times it should give you a smiley face and already updates system partition i think.

check that your update.zip is 100% and do a md5 check on the file just to be sure and then you can probably do a re-wipe and another system update just to be sure after you checked that your update.zip is 100% and correct md5 :) If it dont show the correct md5 the file is corrupted and wont work :)

Right then here we go lol.
Your right about the partitioning it states "Already on the latest system partition"
Checked the Md5 on the update.zip file and all is well
Did the same as last time and wiped the three items then installed the file to system one
Same thing, got to 25% then failed
Could the phone be locked to official Xiaomi updates as this phone is not available outside of China I believe. The phone has not been registered yet either.
I hope this info is of some help and many thanks for your help

No its not locked to Xiaomi :) What you can do is that you start the phone and go into system one inside recovery where it sais reboot you can choose system one or two and choose system one.
1 Go to the update app :)
2 On the bottom of your phone you have 3 buttons " =- underneath each other, a house and a another key" choose =-
3 Select installation pack
4 Choose update.zip

Good moring all, here we go again lol

Right then this is the method I'm using so far. The bits in Italics and underlined are my errors.
  1. Download latest update.zip file from site and check Md5
  2. Remove SD card from phone and mount in Windows PC using card reader or just connect the phone via usb
  3. In windows, browse to the root of the SD card and transfer the file “update.zip to the root (you used to have to rename the file “miuiandroid_mione-2.3.9-ICS.zip ” to “update.zip” but this is no longer required as the file is now called “update.zip” when you download it)
  4. Either reinsert the SD card in the phone or disconnect the usb. If using USB method shut the phone down and if using SD card in PC leave the phone shut down.
That is the first part done.
  1. Power on phone and boot into recovery (hold down volume up when pressing the power button to turn on, don’t release volume up until the recovery menu is displayed – takes about 7 seconds.
  2. Navigate the menus in recovery using the volume keys to highlight option and the power button to select highlighted option.
  3. Select Language (English for me)
  4. Main menu >Wipe&Reset >Wipe Cache then >Wipe User Data, then >Wipe All Data and lastly >Update System Partition (you should have gotten a smiley face saying updated system partition and if you do it a second time for some reason it should give you a smiley face and already updates system partition) >Back to Main-menu.
  5. Main menu >Install update.zip to System One >Yes (takes about 3 minutes). At the moment this did not work for me as I had an error after loading 25%
  6. Main menu >Reboot >Reboot to System One (takes about 3 minutes to boot into OS)
  7. Once in MIUI, use the “Updater” App to flash the “update.zip” ROM from within MIUI,
  • Open “Updater App” then Settings >Select installation pack.
  • Browse to “update.zip” and select.
  • Select >Update Now
  • >Begin Update. This didn’t work for me I had “System update failed”. “Download full ROM package is recommended”
I hope this helps to cast some light on my problem.
Best regards
Geoff

Did u check the md5 sum of the file that you downloaded & verify it with the md5 sum posted on the latest ROM Downloads (2.7.6) thread?
Your download file may be corrupted. The process usually doesnt fail unless the file is corrupt or the SD card has some memory sector issues. Check the MD5 sum and swap memory cards if you have a spare card to try.

Hi.
To answer your points, yes I did an Md5 check and after your suggestion about the SD card I checked it out in windows and there are no errors. I don't have a spare one I'm afraid.
Bit of a mystery, it is most probably something quite simple.
Take care

Have you checked the md5 and have the update.zip on the root of the SD card?
And of course you downloaded the correct miui for your phone?
This one: ad4c2c89975ca7cae3e4142a0bb58107 update.zip (MI-ONE Plus)
http://files.miuiandroid.com/2.7.6/update.zip
Hi, and yes I checked the Md5 and it is in the root of the SD card (it ran for about 25%) then I had the error. The file I'm pretty sure is correct (the last one on the list) but I am now downloading from your link and I'll try again.
Take care
Geoff

Thank you, you too :)
Hi m8. Well I have had another go and still it stops at 25%.
I downloaded the file from your link did a Md5 checksum all was ok. Transferred it to my SD card root and checked Md5 again just to be sure. Went into wipe and cleaned the three items then back and tried to install "update.zip" but it's still no good I'm afraid. anyone out there with any ideas will make me a very happy man.
Take care
Geoff

what system is your phone on? GB or ICS?
When your phone is on and you go into the update app what version do it say that you have?

My last idea is that you flash your phone with fastboot and the latest miui ICS from xiaomi website.
ICS download MIUIv4 Developer Edition and download Wire brush its the ICS version of the latest miui version.
(
The millet phone Standard Edition MI-one Plus) get this version

Then download the software that will let you flash the phone named "Brush tool" on the same website it have the guide
on how to use the tools.
Guide and brush tool

I used the tool myself multiple times and it works nice its the last thing i can come up with if you have done everything else.

1: Updated the system to make it ICS ready
2: download and m5 checked your download and uploaded the file to the root of you sd card
3: wiped and cleaned the 3 things you can in the recovery menu and tried to update both inside the recovery menu and in the system.

Then i think you have tried everything i can come up with that can work and then the brush tool and wire brush is the only thing i can come up with.

And on the ICS Download link you will see many different versions of ICS so remember to get the one i linked to if you want the miui ICS release.

Have a nice day :)

Hi m8 now your getting me a bit out of my depth here with that but let me answer your questions first and put something to you as a last resort.
First off the current version is Miui 2.3.5y does that make sense to you.
Second my phone is "Mi-one C1". I mention this as I have just noticed that in the code list it is called the "Mi one plus" could that be the problem.
Third, there are two system directories in the phone and the default is system one, system two I assume is a backup (can you confirm please). Now then when I do the wipes do I just empty system one or both.
My thinking is that if it only wipes the one directory (one) then two will override things when I try to install. So this is my plan if my assumptions are right:-
  1. Power on phone and boot into recovery (hold down volume up when pressing the power button to turn on, don’t release volume up until the recovery menu is displayed – takes about 7 seconds.
  2. Select Language (English for me)
  3. Main menu >Reboot >Reboot to system two
  4. Power down
  5. Repeat 1. & 2.
  7. System two should now be empty so now we tell the phone to:- Main menu >Install update.zip to System One >Yes (takes about 3 minutes).
I hope you get my thinking, I may be completely off course and if this fails then I will have no backup and could end up with a useless phone. What do you think
Take care
Geoff

Hey im going to answer your questions 1 at the time to make it easier for me to type and for people to understand :)
1: "Miui 2.3.5y" This is the version of Miui you have this is GB NOT ICS so you are still running the original system the phone came with :)

2: "Mi-one C1" The fact that your phone is this version and not the M1 might have a lot to say. I dont have the details but there is a difference in the C1 and the M1 phone. Another forum user have also had some issues regarding updating his phone since it is a C1 phone and not the M1. Forum thread this person also had some issues about the problem and what a user told him/her was to update with the original version from Xiaomi.

3: The default system is one but system two is not a backup. If you wipe the phone it wipes both systems.
System one and two just makes you able to run 2 different version of ICS or GB. so you can have a monthly stable build and the weekly developer version on the phone :)

So you can try the thing the person did in the thread under this or using fastboot and wire brush :)

My thinking is that the problem might be becuase you have a C1 and not a M1 phone.

Hi m8, well that's shot me down in flames lol. I've read the threads and they are way over my head so it looks like I'll be sticking with the Chinese version for a while. I will continue looking and I'm sure someone will come up with an answer when more people get the phone which I might add is quite brilliant. I've been cleaning it up a bit and got it so that the Chinese is not so much of a problem but it would of still been nice to get the English version.
Anyway thanks to everyone who responded it's been a very interesting experience.
Take care.
Geoff.

I would recommend fastboot with brush tool and wire brush method as i said earlier in the thread :)
Its very simple and the xiaomi guide is very easy to understand, all you do is download the tool and the software for your phone and connect your phone to your pc and press flash in the tool and wait for about 300 sec's and you get ICS :)

Hello it's me again. This is as far as I've got:-
  • Downloaded The millet phone Standard Edition MI-one Plus MIUIv4 stable version 82D35CF9549A1F12B9FBB93D44689795, checked the Md5 and unpacked it.
  • Downloaded MiFlash, unpacked and installed on PC (all ok)
This is the bit that's thrown me
  • Operation on the phone, turned off, press and hold the volume + Power + m keys (volume down + power supply) into Fastboot mode USB phone connected to the computer.
What is the “m” key If I hold the volume down and the power key it just starts up normally
Nightmare lol
Take care.
Geoff

The m key is the camera button at least if you hold it in when you are using the phone it starts the camera app and if you are using the camera it can take the pictures :) its the button on the buttom right side of the phone :)
