Gateway 2 Vs 3 ?

Hi, I can't find good comparison about gateway version 2 and 3. Two looks better, has light, 3 - looks like socket - ugly holes should be better funkcionally than 2?

So could it be used for TVs, etc. as well? A combo of the black IR thing and a gateway minus the nightlight plus a smart plug?
