Home gesture doesn't take you home

I think this is a normal behavior of miui but its unlike any other brand ive experienced. When for example in the app drawer you open an app, when you then swipe up to go home it takes you back to the app drawer not home so effectively to go home is a 2 stage task. Can be annoying. Can anybody confirm if this is a normal miui behavior.

Super annoying feature. Would like to use another launcher but then gestures wont work..
