its only for devices with locked bootloader...

Maybe not. They are going after the unofficial sellers, and do not care about those sellers customers

A flick of a bit in the next OTA update can brick your device. Nothing here about it depending on the state of the bootloader

"Here's something VERY important before you flash or update the ROM.

1. Xiaomi Phones manufactured for Chinese market are not able to run MIUI Global ROM.
2. Xiaomi Phones manufactured for Global markets are not able to run MIUI China ROM.

We highly recommend you to buy Xiaomi Phones via official or authorized sales channels and double check the system infomation before flashing or updating.

Thank you for understanding."

Bingo!

Xiaomi changes Mix2S model from "Global" to "China" via OTA update, which causes bootloop.

8.9.7 - downloaded OTA, rebooted -- now bootlooping to Recovery menu
http://en.miui.com/thread-3819702-1-1.html

My error message is "This MIUI version can't be installed on this device."
When I try "Reboot " -- it reboots right back into the Recovery menu.

. . .
I myself have a 8GB/256GB that was marked as an XA model. That model number became an "XE" model number after this OTA update.

I think this should violate user privacy in some way if they've silently forced this update upon people without consent! not surprised to see this happening, did warn people to avoid Grey market traders for a long time now... Thats why the names of Grey traders are censored on our forum so we can't and wont advise where to buy the devices.

I have a global 4x redmi with unlocked bootloader, with miui.eu. I would like to know, if I want to return to Miui stock will I suffer brick? Or do these new policies not affect my device?

1.Just not lock bootloader and You dont get bootloop. If You want lock bootloader You must flash to stock rom example for Chinese version Phone You must flash to Miui China and lock bootloader.
2. If You have lock bootloader dont try flash via Updater from China Miui to Global or from Global to China, because You will have bootloop. Thats all.
