When using ES File Explorer you have to turn on "Root Explorer - (Mont R/W)" in menu.

I tried to turn on "Root Explorer" on ES File Explorer and got the error message as attached.
I think it is because my Mi3 has not been rooted.
What do you mean previously by "All methods require root but MIUI comes rooted by default."?

I installed this SuperSU from Google Play Store, and when started got this error message (attached).

I'm not sure what he meant by "Flash from recovery or system update and select update package." and how to do it.
(Sorry that I have no rooting experience.)

Does it mean that I need to manually root my device, like I can just install the MIUI 6?

I just found that my MIUI is still v5.
Or it is the firmware issue (Kernel version, Build number)?
