New Subtle change in screen apperance/color with 120hz enabled

Since I installed Xiaomi EU weekly 21.12.8 (MIUI 12.6) I noticed that the apperence of the screen changes in a subtle way sometimes. For instance, dark elements of the background change to darker shade when I stop scrolling on the google now feed. The screen flickers for one millisecond and than the color profile looks a bit different. Hard to explain. It it only visible when using 120hz in the screen settings but not 60hz. I think it is related to the adaptive refresh rate. I get the feeling that it happens when the phone switch from 120 hz to 60 hz. It is a bit annoying. Not sure if it is related to the specific build of this firmware or if it is a general problem when using adaptive refresh rate in MIUI. Before I flashed Xiaomi EU I used china stable offical firmware and did not notice this problem on that firmware. However, since it is quite subtle I may have missed it.
Any thoughts?

Just locked the phone to 90hz using ADB. No flicker/color shifting. The problem is clearly related to dynamic refresh rate.

MIUI should have 90Hz as an option. It exists in 3rd party ROMs such as Lineage, I don't see why MIUI can't have it, too. It makes perfect sense for those who don't see that much of a difference between 120Hz and 90Hz, but want to save some battery.

Yes. Locking to 90hz using ADB commands did only work for like 30 minutes. After a while the phone starts switching between 60hz and 90hz. A user of Mi 11 Ultra on the Swedish forum Swedroid has the exact same problem. I am asked him about software version and will report back. This is a really annoying issue. Every time the phone switch the refresh rate a flicker occurs and the color profile looks slightly different.

According to a user on Swedroid this is not a bug. It is normal that the colors and clearity of the screen differs between different refresh rates even when you are not scrolling. If this is true, I really need to find a way to lock the refresh rate permanently. I find it really annoying when the colors look different as soon as I stop scrolling.

I am glad someone else also noticed this annoying problem. I observe this issue on 11T Pro with the Global ROM 12.5.10.0(RKDMIXM). In the developer options, it is possible to switch on the widget with the current refresh rate, and I confirm that this issue is due to the refresh rate drop from 120 Hz to 60 Hz on static images. It seems to me that if Xiaomi knows that white color is different for 60 and 120 Hz, it should either lock the refresh rate or calibrate the screen somehow remotely with the update because the 120 Hz mode becomes barely usable.

The issue can be reproduced easily by the way: just go to the menu where 60 and 120 Hz are switched and switch them a few times. You will notice that the image is different and this exactly causes 120 Hz screen flickering.

There is sort of a workaround which I found in this topic

So now it looks like that at least three devices are affected: Redmi Note 10 Pro, Mi 11 Ultra and 11T Pro. This starts to look like a serious defect, and Xiaomi has to do something with it. I have sent a system report in settings, maybe this could be sent elsewhere.

Agree with you, I also think this is a bug for some ROMs and even some displays, maybe the developers decided to play with the adaptive refresh rate for energy saving and did not know that image contrast differs so much for some party of display modules. But these are all just guesses in any case. So we can only wait for updates

I just flashed the latest EU Weekly for 11 Pro (MIUI 13), did a clean install. During my 30 minutes using the phone the refresh rate has been constant set to 120hz with youtube as the only expection (youtube runs on 60hz all the time). It does not switch to 60hz when I stop scrolling as it did before I flashed this rom. I do not remember exactly when the problem appeared for the first time after i flashed EU Weekly MIUI 12.6 a couple of weeks ago, it was probably not there immediately. Would not be suprised if the issue appear again soon on this build as well (but will keep my fingers crossed).

Sounds really great! As I remember, I noticed this effect immediately after activating the phone, in the first few minutes, so I hope in your case the effect will not reappear and this will make 120 Hz usable. In any case, let us wait

There is truth in your words, but in any case if the manufacturer claims that the device it sells supports some feature, this feature should be supported on a usable level, because it might be the reason why some people buy the device.

The effect has not reapperad yet. It uses 120 hz almost all the time and only switch to 60hz in certain apps. Battery life is more or less the same so I assume adaptive refresh rate is mostly a marketing gimmick.

By the way, today I found Mi 11i in the electronics shop with MIUI 12.0 and checked whether colors displaying is any different at 60 and 120 Hz. Well, it is not: colors are the same. This is interesting because it might mean that 60 and 120 Hz must not necessarily be different in terms of colors.

I notice it too.. and hope it is fixed on miui 13 but the screen flickering on adaptive refresh rate was still there..im using xiaomi 11t pro.. my solution on this flickering without lowering my refreshrate to 60hz was using standard/orignal color.. the flickering only shows at vivid and saturated color scheme and 60 to 90 percent brightness.. in my observation

Just wanted to post my findings here after a lot of playing around and research. I have found the 30hz displays as 120hz with the show refresh rate option checked, I confirmed that it is indeed running at 30hz when it says 120 after the setting is set in galaxy max Hz, using the steps described here:

Also, regarding any colour shift, I have found that 90hz is not really supported very well, whenever it is enabled there is a huge shift if colours when switching from 90hz to any other refresh rate, so I've eventually decided to use 120hz with a minimum of 30hz and the colour shift is very small, almost completely unnoticeable, and can be reduced even more by the minimum brightness option in galaxy max hz.
