TWRP Encrypted data. How to update?

Hello. I'm using a Note 5 (whyred) with MIUI 10 | 9.3.28 (weekly)
I want to install the latest versión 9.4.18.
When rebooting to TWRP it asks for an encryption password. (TWRP 3.2.1.0)
I read this password is the same as the one to unlock the phone, but it doesn't work for me.

it pormpts:
"Trying Decryption
Failed to decrypt data.
Unable to decrypt with default password. You may need to perform a Format Data.
Updating partition details...
...done
Full SELinux support is present..
Failed to decrypt data."

And gets back to ask the password.
(I have a couple of pictures if necessary)


This never happened to me in the previous updates.
I have been using xiaomi.eu since I have the phone, almost one year ago, and updated this way many times.


Does this happened to anyone else?
This suggested Format Data whipes all of my data? (apps, photos, videos...)

Is it necessary to update TWRP to the lastest? (3.3.0.0)
Can I do it before formating the data?

before going to format, you may install from actual TWRP the REDWOLF version for your phone model. possibly Orangefox TWRP will be also a way to go

Due to the encryption, I can't search the "twrp-3.3.0-0-whyred.img" from the internal storage.

Answering myself. Yes, is possible to update from the SD

And no, the encryption problem persist.
So I guess the next thing to do is a backup of important data and then Format Data and install the new rom.

try orangewolf version or any other older one.
No need to install , just boot them one by one in fastboot (fastboot boot "twrp*.img") to see if any progress (hopefully!)
PS: don't forget to move the files in your ADB folder with different name.

I installed this twrp that they recomended in another forum, without having to deleted anything from data. I put the phone in fasboot mode and flash from the computer with CMD and the commands:

fastboot flash recovery filename_image.img

fastboot boot filename_image.img

OK! But they are in encrypted situation. Easy to install TWRP but Were you dealing out of that situation yourself?

I went from Oreo to Pie and when there was a new update it told me that it was encrypted. I solved it with that recovery and I was able to update

You must install a file called disable dm verity after the ROM and before restarting. but the only solution is a format data

Hello. I've been busy and did not pay attention to the encryption problem of the phone.

I have one last question.

It seems format data is the easy way to remove the encryption.
After format data I read to wipe Dalvic / ART Cache, System and Cache
And once it finishes, install the rom you want.

My question. Can the rom be in the internal storage or is it going to be erased in any of this wipes?

I guess the rom file will not be erased because wipe internal storage remains unchecked.

Whatever is put in the internal storage, it'll be erased only by a Format data.

As recovery, I used OrangeFox but restoring my stuff with it caused a bootloop.
That's why I use RedWolf instead. It restored successfully my stuff today

To get rid of the encryption error that happened when I switched from Android 8.1 to 9, I formatted data.
Maybe there a more subtil way to do it but this dumb one is efficient.

I had the same problem so I formatted data as you mentioned,after the format the recovery reads my internal storage and mentions it as "internal storage 503xxx mbs". So I try to flash magisk file through OTG to root my device, but the recovery won't recognize my OTG flashdrive so I tried another one but same.
I reboot to system to put the magisk file in the internal storage and reboot to recovery to flash it but I find that my system has replaced TWRP recovery with the stock one, So I flashTWRP again and format data again and so on, I'm stuck in this loop and I don't know what to do any solutions?

Using PitchBlack recovery for Whyred fixed this problem (RedWolf did not).
