Upgrade Suggestions From 7.5.1.0 Laicnde

hey guys,
Got a Redmi 3 with 7.5.1.0 LAICNDE.
All is fine except -
a) it's getting sluggish, thinking has something to with it only having ~400MB of free space on internal storage.
b) weird app issues - Xiaomi Music app doesn't discover new tracks, some messengers either don't show notifications or show them after pretty good delay (up to few hours)

So looking for suggestions to upgrade - should i go for latest stable? Or something else.

I would appreciate if someone could point me to upgrade guide - can i jump from 7.5.1.0 to latest?
Upgrade prerequisites?
Can I keep my app data or will it all be lost?
