Hi There:

I m new to 'smartphone' world. My first smartphone is MI2. I m not sure what are the things I should do to make it work normal / or upto date? {My phone is on the way from HK - www.ibuygou.com --- can't wait and excited too much to see my phone}

I have read from few messages here that I need to move to english version of ROM - Correct?

Then activate/ or change to use Gapps. ( I live in australia)

when they say download the ROM - so, I assume that it must be done through MI2 using the internet? - Correct?

I m new + i m not so confident how I m going to do this!!! Is it easy?

Hope there a good hearts here to walk me through step by step . ( I do know the first thread is the main thing to update the MI2)

Thanks in advance....

Theres 2 ways to get the ROM and Gapps on your phone.

1) Navigate (via the web browser) to http://miuandroid.com
2) Find the newest ROM (Xiaomi M2 = aries), download it. Since Xiaomi phones have dual partitions Gapps are included for Xiaomi M1 / Xiaomi M2
3) once downloaded, go to updater.apk
4) find that zip you download and click flash.

I'm on the same spot as him, since my Mi2 Is clearing customs in a few days and getting HOME...
Won't that update the second partition? I mean, if the phone boots in System One as default your method will update System Two and if I do that again, being in System two, that will update System one....

How do we always update the same partition? Is recovery the only way? I mean, recovery only and always updates system one so, rebooting in recovery guarantees a consistent update chain, right?

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Wouldn't want to mess up the phone before I get a chance to properly enjoy it.

The two systems share the same /data. Its only the system that is changed, thus your sitting in system 1. The updater flashes system 2. You boot into system 2, which has all your data from system 1, but w/ the system files of system 2.

Repeat and since every release.

Yes, but if I'm in system 2 and update, it will flash system one because the updater can't flash the system that is in use atm, right?
And if I want to keep one system original, I should always flash the other. So, best way is to always flash system one from recovery and keep 2 as it came with the phone right?

No reason to keep the original software. It will be like MIUI Stable 2.5.12, theres 7 months of development past that. That method just seems annoying and un-needed. They built the 2 system setup for that exact reason that you shouldn't have to go into recovery anymore, unless you break one of your partitions, which then all you do is reboot into the other via recovery and flash a working build to the other partition.

Personally what I have done is the following (ignoring the playing at the start)

1) Download the latest miui here from the main page of this site before the phone arrives.
2) When it arrives cheer and kiss it (optional stage)
3) Boot up as normal into standard pre-installed miui from the phone just to make sure it works!
4) Upgrade the 2nd partition to the latest version using the updater on the phone while in miui (same place you would find standard android update under settings -> about phone if you cant find it. (This is optional but personally I wanted to make sure the 2nd partition was up to date in case I ever need it)
5) After it updates It'll reboot you. Just reboot and go back in. Rename the file you downloaded at stage 1 to update.zip
6) Plug your phone into the USB & computer and copy the update.zip to the root of the phone
7) Power off the phone. Then Press volume up (when the phone is off) and keep your finger on that and press the power button. As soon as the miui logo appears let go of both.
8) You'll go into the mi-recovery part. Select English (use the volume button to move and power to select). then "Install update.zip to system One"
9) When its done select "reboot" and "Reboot to System One"
10 Then it will do some updates on boot.
11) Then you will get be in the new and improved English version.

The 2nd partition wont work but if you ever mess up your 1st you always have a way to go back (if you clear all the cache etc).

Might not be the "best" way from the experts but this is how I do it.

Then all following updates from this site: I just download a new rom. copy update.zip to the partition (while booted in partition 1) and then step 6 onwards.

I hope it helps (I think I got every stage)

btw you'll have play store etc on it after all this.

I believe there are a lot of applications in the Google Play market to explore.

I've read from this forum that by using Mi Credit, you can buy new themes.
