Does this works for xiaomi mi 8 se? Do you have to update the recovery too?
Now I have the 20.1.21 version installed and I plan to not clean flash

So far this version is good, new look, new features.
But besides the awesomeness, there is some small bugs that I found on my Mi 8, I don't know if anyone has it too:
1, The toggles position can't be changed. I tried many times but failed.

2, Laggy transition when I quit an app to the home screen

That's all issues I found now
So far, this build is till good to enjoy

There is no system-app update menu on xiaomi.eu ROMs, updates may cause more bugs than without them... (and it's a xiaomi.eu dev choice).

Are the chances high, that the battery consumption goes back to miui11.2 level in later releases again?
Or maybe even better?

Looking forward to the 20.5.14 release. Hopefully adds more support in Individual Apps in Dark Mode. Just gotta wait for all ROMs to be made before release.

Try rebooting the phone then change the toggles
