New 8.1.3.0 Can Not Set Up E-mail Account

Redmi note 2 @ 8.1.3.0 Stable

I have a problem seting up e-mail account - I get response "-ERR [AUTH] Invalid user"

Procedure:
Account I am trying to set up has addres in the form: name.lastname@email.com
MIUI 8.1 e-mail app first forces wrong username in the form: name.lastname
After that I am allowed to change to proper username (NOT name.lastname) but mail server again responds with "-ERR [AUTH] Invalid user"

I do not know which username e-mail app is sending out but it is obviously not the correct one.

I do not have a problem setting up this account anywhere else (Thunderbird, Gmail app on the same phone, e-mail app on Redmi Note 2 @ MIUI 6.3.17,...) so the fault is not on my side.
Also, I am able to set up 4 other e-mail accounts on the same phone, same app. The only difference is they all use username in the form: name.lastname.

I can confirm this but, also I can confirm that the client uses the e-mail address as username. I've checked my own mail server and this is what comes up;

dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 1 attempts in 14 secs): user=<name(a)domain.net>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.xx.xx.xx, lip=83.xx.xx.xx, TLS: Disconnected, session=<xx-xx-xx>

I can't post an @ so used (a) instead, but the log remains the same.
