Brightness goes full without changing it

From time to time the brightness of the screen goes full without changing any settings while using the phone, happens even on the main menu screen, so apps bugging out can be discarded.

Automatic bright and read mode setting are off.

Any idea what could be happening?

Enter on Test menu by dialing:

*#*#MIUI#*#*

Then check the light sensor value if in a constat light its value is changing.
If yes, then I guess is an hardware issue, otherwise could be only a firmware glitch. In second case I would recommend you to flash phone firmware from scratch or do a factory reset. Obviously you have to backup all phone content first.
