No contacts listed when sending new medsage

When i send a new message through the new message option, my contacts are unavailable. It says there are no contacts listed so i have to send messages through the contacts menu instead. I have set up a contact group.but cannot seem to find any way of sending a message to the group. When i send messages via the contacts menu i cannot add any additional recipients either. While i am talking about messages does any body know how i view smileys as images rather than text?
