New Something went wrong. When trying so sign into Google Account

After the OS forced me to login / create a xiaomi account for the phone, all the google apps showed a message saying that the account needed to be verified by signing in again. Trying to sign in would result in a loading wheel that never went away, so I removed the google accounts as suggested by some forums. Now when I try to sign into a google account to add it I go through MFA and after accepting google's policies I get the error message "Something went wrong there. Please try again" - I have tried deleting cache of google apps, deleting app data. Trying different MFA methods but no luck
