ok guys and gals i have a noob question for you. i recently bought a MI 9 se with the MIUI 10.2.9.0 Global stable Rom, can i change it for the EU version of MIUI 10.2.9.0 EEA without unlocking bootloader since from what i gather unlocking the phone makes it less secure and also loose some of the MI cloud features

I think there should not be any problems installing the EEA version. Download the recovery version and try the integrated updater. Simply select the update package and see what happens. If that does not work, I would try it with the XiaoMiTool.
As for the loss of the cloud features when the bootloader is open, I have not heard that some functions are no longer working.
Only the safetynet check will no longer be yours, and will be displayed on Google as an uncertified device.

No issues with my Mi 8 Pro. Check if camera app has storage permissions

xiaomi.eu ROMs seem to modify fstab by default to disable forcencryption
Is that done by intention?

Tested with latest weekly ROMs for Mi MIX 2 and Redmi Note 6 Pro - maybe others are affected to.

I've written a script for Mi MIX2 to enable encryption again and to follow android security guidlines:

But this script has to be installed after every weekly ROM release - not the perfect way to handle this ;-)

Do you plan to enable/fix encryption for those (and maybe other) devices affected?

Why is the unencrypted internal memory so important to you and what are the benefits?

This is something we discussed a long time back, I also have the same issue, and each time I have to flash a modified fstab file to make the encryption work.

Some of us have to use encrypted devices to be able to access work related items.

Encryption blocks TWRP from gaining access to internal storage. We've no plans to cause that behavior by default.
If you're concerned about security - you've already compromised the device's security the moment you unlocked your bootloader.

To you and everyone else having this problem, I think it is a bug caused by Viper4Android. For me my phone booted fine after I had uninstalled it.
Search google for "Magisk Manager for Recovery Zip" and flash this zip in your recovery. Then go to the terminal and type "mm". Then select the option "Uninstall modules" and type in the name for Viper4Android (The module is case Sensitive! Type it perfectly the same as it is shown to you). When Viper is uninstalled your phone should boot normal again and you can reinstall Viper through Magisk Manager.
I hope this helps you, I was really frustrated and was happy when I used this method to get my phone back to life without wiping everthing.
Thank you! It worked for me

When you are under TWRP installed your phone is open book in 30 seconds time by deleting one file in TWRP file explorer.
Do You understand this little detail?

I tried using the updater but after i run the EEA version and the phone reboots i try to access the update log and i get an error "You Don't have permission to Access Update Log" and the update fails.

as for the reason i dont want to open the bootloader the official unlock app warn against it http://xiaomitips.com/media/2016/03/miflash-unlock-tool-disclaimer.png
points 3 and 4 worry me the most

Isn't that exactly his concern?

Twrp is secured by password once encryption is enabled, isn't it?

I've mixed feelings about that too...

You have to get your priorities in order first, IMHO.
Then it becomes easy to decide what to do.

1. First priority: work or fun?

What is someone thinking who is flashing weekly beta roms on a device he is using for work with an employer who requires high security?

Personally, for real nuclear security in a critical environment - big money &/or secrets involved - I would not be using any Android device.

Private device, Fun only..

But, even private stuff might be worth being protected, so, I was under the Impression, an encrypted device requires a pattern, a pin, a password in order to access the storage, if yes, your argument renders invalid.

Twrp cannot read or delete a file within an encrypted partition, accessing a device by adb is a different story, so usb debugging should be disabled if encryption is used.

I didn't ask for me, I do pretty much know what I'm doing with my devices :)

I just was curious whether we got his inquiry straight and if we are on the same page :)

There have previously been quite a few problems with TWRPs, both official and unofficial, not handling encryption correctly, or at all.
What the current status is I have no idea.

The problem for Xiaomi.eu is that they have no control over the various TWRPs being used.
