I think you need to come to terms with this being a multiple years old device

With sensible use you might be safe but I doubt it's getting security updates even in official channels

This is so sad. This is the PERFECT phone, literally. So ahead of its time, NOTCHLESS, the parts are soooo cheap, 120W Charging, Snapdragon 888+ still sharp af. I would love to get the updates for Hyper OS 2 as many other would but sadly you are expected to get a new phone every 2 years... If there would be a exeptional case, it would be the Mix 4.

Yes indeed. I'm a bit confused because I thought I replied here, but my message seems to have disappeared. Did I say something naughty?

I have my China ROM Mix 4 as my daily driver now. I have done basically nothing except turn off and uninstall the easy bloat ware, install playstore and go from there.

Three issues remain.

One, nfc pay doesn't work. Google wallet appears to work, my. Bank allows the addition of my card, but the pay terminals aren't happy when I try and make a transaction.

Two, syncing and notifications seems very chilled! I mean it doesn't seem to bother much about push notifications until it collects up a few, or I turn it on and then it delivers them all at the same time. I think I've done what I can with permissions, battery management and auto launch, but on certain apps the phone just seems to insist it knows better.

Three, the magnificent screen with no camera cutout is not really being used by apps. The only apps that properly used the fullscreen are camera and YouTube. Everything else either leaves a black bar at the top, or leaves the status bar visible.

To resolve problem 1 I have just picked up a Xiaomi watch S1 pro for payments. It seems to work quite well. It has an absolutely unbelievable lack of apps (no Google, no play, no maps, nothing! The only app available to install is a calculator!! Imagine a "smart" watch that couldn't be a calculator. And happy. Built in GPS but not allowing me to use it is quite impressive on the scale of incompetence. But I have managed to pay with it this morning, and it is currently charging on my no-name cheapo wireless charging alarm clock. So cudos for those two features.

Now, some time later, to my question.

Would all the pain of unlocking, flashing eu stable ROM, then rooting, then magisk etc resolve any of my three issues reliably without breaking anything else?

I'm pretty happy as is, it works, I would it to be perfect, but I don't want to go on a painful journey of discovery only to end up with an even worse experience. So can you tell me if I should stick or twist?
