Restart the phone in fastboot mode
Connect it to your PC
fastboot devices (verify that the phone is recognized)
fastboot flash recovery 3-4-0.img (the name that you named your 3.4.0 recovery file)
fastboot reboot 3-4-2.img (the name that you named your 3.4.2.1206 recovery file)
Be patient, it might take up to 70 seconds for recovery to boot.

EDIT1: I obviously forgot to enter the additional word "recovery". Now I try it again!

EDIT2: Now the flashing of the 3.4.0.img worked, but the reboot 3.4.2.img failed:

Mate, read again the command syntax from my previous post.

You're making a simple syntax error.

The error message you receive indicates that you again mistyped something.
Does the "dir" command give you among other files the twrp342.img, too? Did you rename your 3.4.2.0623 to twrp342.img?
Fastboot commands syntax must be respected strictly.

Yes, but I used the latest v3.4.2B.1206. Maybe this was a mistake. Where can I get the v3.4.2.0623?

1206 and 0623 are almost exactly the same. I can't tell you where to find it.
Try one more thing:
fastboot reboot bootloader
Then try rebooting to twrp as you did before.
I suggest after each boot to bootloader you verify the phone is recognized with fastboot devices.
Also, try powering off the phone and then see if it boots to your recovery (vol up + power).
It should.
However, the problem is that 3.4.0 you can use only with OTG drive.

Ufffff, another idea - try fastboot reboot recovery. It should bring you to your recovery.

Glad it worked. My guess is that you actually flashed the 1206 instead of 3.4.0, but that doesn't matter now.
Next step, connect the phone to the PC and make sure it is recognized as an external storage device. If so:
Format data (advanced wipe I think), type "yes" for confirmation,
You could as well do wipe cache/dalvik, just in case.
Copy the ROM you want to install to your phone storage.
Choose install, and follow the procedure.
Wipe cache/dalvik.
Reboot to system.
Be patient, the first boot could take several minutes, do not power off the phone until it fully boots.

And also you missed the step to reboot to recovery again after format data , this is mandatory ..
There is also a trick for fast first installation for newbies..
Enter twrp ..
Choose Install / find the rom zip and install EU rom ( swipe to confirm flash )..
After installation finish go back to main menu ..
Choose Wipe / Format data / type yes and hit enter ..
Go back to main menu and choose Reboot to system ..
Wait few minutes to boot ..

To be honest I don't remember if I did it the other night when I was flashing 12.2.7.
Maybe because I was on 0623 at the time. Didn't mess with all new/old twrp thing.

I said , the fastest way for newbies it's this ..
But it doesn't harm at all and it works like a charm .. the process will be correct even like that ..

If you format data before flashing (as per my suggestion) your ROM.zip file will be erased and you have to transfer it again.
If you follow the instructions by @gkalen you are good to go.
Format data in either case is mandatory, it's only a matter of sequence of steps.

Wherever you copy it ..
You have to copy the zip in the root of sd card or anyway in a folder to find it ..
